2009 SOCIETY AUCTION
This auction, which is open to the public,
closes on December 1, 2009.
Are you ready to start looking for some fabulous bargains? It’s time
for the special auction sponsored by the St. Helena, Ascension & Tristan
da Cunha Philatelic Society. The auction contains 170 lots, and certainly
has something for everyone. But you won’t know what you’ll find unless
you take time to look through the listings.
This is likely the biggest auction ever sponsored by the society from
the standpoint of material and diversity. Everything from books and special
event covers to postcards and long runs of newspapers of the various islands
will be found, all with very low starting prices.
Lots are listed by vendor, so close examination of the entire auction
is required to see everything that is on offer. For example, Lot 3 is a
rare signed copy of Allan B. Crawford’s delightful book, I Went to Tristan.
The book contains maps, sketches and photographs, and has a very attractive
minimum bid.
The auction even has a couple of coins, including Lot 57, a St. Helena-Ascension
50p coin recognizing the 1986 Royal Wedding, but the state is clearly stamped
July 23, 1086. An error? Who knows? There’s only a $7 minimum bid.
Several copies of Robin Taylor’s immensely popular and deeply researched
series of Tristan da Cunha monographs are also listed, each with a starting
bid less than half of the retail value. Some great bargains will be found
here!
Numerous special event covers include Lot 70, a Marion Island 1979 cover
commemorating the visit of the M.V. Agulhas to the island. There are many
different cachets on the most attractive cover. Bids start at only $11.
Likely some of the most sought lots will be several larger groups such
as Lot 139, a jackpot for St. Helena postal history fans. This grouping
contains an accumulation of about 88 covers from 1936 to 2004, and has
a minimum bid of only $120. Lot 147 is 32 postcards postmarked on Tristan
da Cunha, and has an opening bid of only $60.
For specialists, there are several lots of original artwork for issues
of Tristan da Cunha, prepared by leading stamp designers such as Miss Jennifer
M. Toombs and Clive Abbott. These include watercolor drawings, pencil tracings,
acetates, and much more. There are no less than nine such lots, each beginning
at $80 to $130.
The full auction listing will be included with the October 2009 issue
of the South Atlantic Chronicle, which will be mailed to members of the
St. Helena, Ascension & Tristan da Cunha Philatelic Society in October.
The auction is not, however, limited to society members. It has been posted
on the society web site (www.atlanticislands.org/auction.htm),
and hard copy lists can be ordered from Dr. Everett L. Parker, 719 Moosehead
Lake Rd., Greenville, ME 04441-9727 USA.
The deadline for bids is December 1, and bids may be sent either electronically
to eparker@hughes.net or by mail
to Dr. Parker at the address above.
This is an important auction for the society, and President Ted Cookson
urges as many people as possible to take part. A portion of the funds raised
will be used to offset society costs, including publication of the quarterly
South Atlantic Chronicle. For additional information about membership,
contact Secretary Tom Bowman, 901 Aspen Dr., Mountaintop, PA 18707-9104.
His e-mail address is: llbowman@epix.net.
Lots will be awarded to highest bidder. In case
of tie bids, the earliest postmark or e-mail will be awarded the lot. Bids
will be increased by $1 over the next highest bid. A 10% surcharge will
be added to all bidders’ invoices. A 10% surcharge will be charged to vendors.
Postage and shipping charges will be added to all invoices. Please
contact eparker@hughes.net with
any questions regarding bidding procedures or mailing. You may also call
(207) 695-3163 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. EDT Monday through Friday with any
questions. Please inspect each vendor’s lots carefully as many bargains
will be found. Remember in bidding that the auction benefits the society.
Please bid by lot number; vendor number not required. MB means minimum
bid accepted; EST means estimated value. All minimum bids and estimated
values are shown in U. S. dollars. Bids below 80% of estimate are not accepted.
Bids may be submitted by e-mail to
eparker@hughes.net or mailed to: Dr. Everett L. Parker, 719 Moosehead
Lake Rd., Greenville, ME 04441-3626 USA.
